Italian Immigrants of Hobart

At the beginning of 2018 I was about to embark on a year long trip to many different countries. There was the potential that I would stay and work in Europe for an indefinite amount of time. The prospect was a little unsettling. Not only because I’d be leaving home, leaving what is safe and known but also, there was the possibility I would never see my parents again. I wondered what it must have been like for them and for other Italian immigrants in Tasmania to leave their home, leave their families and loved ones, to venture out across to the other side of the planet in search of a better life. I wanted to ask my parents “paesani” or fellow Italians what it was like to leave Italy as young migrants and begin a new life as immigrants in a new country. So I decided to reach out to the Italian community and listen to their stories of travel, loss, new discovery and love.
